Martha Gellhorn: Wrap-up and Author Chat with Caroline Moorehead
And a new subscriber benefit...
Caroline Moorehead—author of our May book Gelhorn: A 20th Century Life—was in fine form on our very first Radical Women live video chat today.
Smart, well-researched and armed with engaging stories, she weighed in on Martha’s life—the role of privilege; what it was like to live in 1930’s pre-war Europe; the parallels to our challenges today; why she married Hemingway; her mothering challenges; and how she handled her elder years. We even had some fun speculating on what Martha might be doing if she were living and working right now.
Those were all gems, but my favorite take-aways were the insider bits: why she decided to write the book; her process for researching, interviewing sources for and writing her biographies; why she chose to treat Martha’s death the way she did; and what she’s working on now.
The cherry on the sundae? Subscribers got to ask their questions and engage with the author in real time. It was beyond energizing for a group of savvy women to discuss the grit and courage in Martha Gellhorn’s story directly with her biographer.
Meanwhile, there’s been interest in going deeper still—a space to share experiences beyond the book. About what we each can do/are doing to counter the cruelty, racism, bigotry and misogyny on the rise right now.
In response, I’ll be hosting an experimental zoom session on June 6th at 11 AM Pacific/2PM Eastern for paid subscribers (so if you needed another incentive to belly up, here you go 😉).
If we like how it goes, we’ll make it a recurring part of the Radical Women Book Club experience.
Meanwhile, stay tuned for our upcoming June read!
Cheers,
Rochelle
